Recent heavy rains across South Africa have posed significant challenges for the renowned Kruger National Park (KNP), leading to the closure of several camps and gravel roads.
The torrential downpours have particularly affected main routes between Skukuza and Lower Sabie, prompting swift action from the KNP Roads Management Team to ensure the safety of tourists and visitors.
A statement from the South African National Parks (SANParks) confirmed the situation, emphasising that while flooding has largely been localised to the south of the Olifants River, all park gates remain open and operational.
Waterflow forecasts predict that the Sabie and Sand rivers will experience heavy flows for some time, resulting in caution for those traversing these areas.
The rain has not only devastated road conditions in the southern parts of the park but has also led to significant water levels in the north, where the Luvuvhu River is reported at its highest for the season.
SANParks is closely monitoring these roads, advising all road users to pay attention to closures.
"The KNP Disaster Management Team was activated to handle potential emergencies effectively," stated a SANParks representative.
"We urge road users to exercise extreme vigilance, particularly when crossing low level bridges, and not to leave their vehicles to clear debris. In the event of any hindrance, contacting emergency personnel is highly recommended for assistance."
Encouraging a proactive approach, SANParks has requested that visitors check in with their respective rest camp receptions for updates on road conditions and alternative routes.
Furthermore, those with internet access can stay informed through online updates regarding the road situation south of the park.
