Johannesburg - More than 100 first-year students received free laptops from insurance company, Zororo Phumlani Funeral Plan, at their various give-away ceremonies across the country.
As the fourth annual give-away, Zororo held two simultaneous events in Cape Town and Gauteng where over 80 students were awarded laptops.
Zororo managing director Robertta Mutimbiri addressed the recipients at the Gauteng event, applauding them for their academic success.
“As you might have witnessed in the last few years of your educational journey, the decisions that you make today will impact the years ahead of you.
“It is worth applauding that you are here today to receive laptops which will go a long way in the journey that you are embarking on now, but it is also imperative that I point out to you that hard work and sacrifice will definitely take you to the top but it takes character for you to remain at the top.
“Once again the decisions that you will make today will impact the years ahead of you, hence choose wisely,” Mutimbiri said.
Among the recipients were 10 Vaal University of Technology students. Head of the logistics department Professor Chengedzai Mafini received the laptops on behalf of the students.
Mafini expressed his gratitude to Zororo.
“I would like to thank Zororo for doing this, as by doing this for us, we are also able to give back to the students in the lecture room.
“Ensuring that we nurture them and that they grow to become something in life, they become entrepreneurs, business leaders and they are able to go out there and make a difference,” Mafini said.
Another thrilled recipient was Wits University first-year biomedical engineering student Ruvimbo Nicole Zimbodza, 19, who was one of the 41 recipients at the Gauteng event.
Zimbodza told The Star she was happy to be selected as a recipient after she applied online.
“I am very happy to receive a laptop today.
“Since everything is online, I have been struggling with having to wake up very early in the morning to go to the computer labs.
“This laptop is going to make it a lot easier and I will be able to get a lot more work done,” she said.
About 120 laptops were donated this year. Zororo started their laptop give-away initiative in 2018, with just 20 laptops.
The give-away is aimed at helping equip matriculants with the tools they need for university.
