Following an impressive first outing of the new season in the MTN8, Orlando Pirates will begin their quest to end the reign of Mamelodi Sundowns in the league this weekend.
As the defending Betway Premiership champions, Sundowns have now won the last eight league titles in a row.
Looking at their squad, it’s difficult to see any result other than the champions continuing to dominate.
Their closest challengers, of course, are Orlando Pirates, and under new coach Abdeslam Ouaddou, they will have lofty ambitions.
“The boys are training very well, and we’re eager to kick off the PSL season,” said Ouaddou.
“There’s a lot of pressure and expectations. All the teams are well prepared, but so are we. The support from our fans in the MTN8, and we hope they’ll be back to push us again.
“We know it will be tough, there are no easy games in the PSL. They will come with ambition, but we’re ready. Physically and technically, the players are prepared. Our confidence is at the top, and there’s a great vibe in the dressing room.”
First up for Pirates is their clash against Sekhukhune United at Orlando Stadium on Saturday in a 5.30pm kick-off.
Former Orlando Pirates striker Vilakazi, on Thursday, told SportsBoom.co.za, he is expecting big things from the Soweto Giants this season.
“You can see that Pirates mean business this season. Last season they fell short a bit, but this season they mean business with the players that they’ve signed in the team, it tells you that they want the league and they want to win this season,” Vilakazi said.
