For some, playing on lush green soccer pitches is a routine part of their football experience, but for many young players in underprivileged areas this remains a distant dream.

In communities such as these, the beautiful gamer of soccer is often played on ugly, rugged sand pitches where, ironically, the beauty of the game flourishes despite the harsh conditions. Notwithstanding these challenges, in one community hope thrives in the form of a local soccer club that is dedicated to nurturing talent against the odds.

This beacon of hope is Shooting Stars FC. The club, formerly known as Kappa United, was established in 2001 in Pescodia (Roodepan) by dedicated coach Clifford Esel. The club underwent its rebranding in 2023 – from Kappa United to Shooting Stars – to reflect their mission of elevating young talent in the community to new heights.

Coach Esel, speaking to the DFA, emphasised the club’s mission: “We want to give these youngsters a platform to develop their skills, maintain discipline, and work together as a team,” he said.

And coach Esel has a broad vision. With nearly 80 players on its roster, ranging from Under-11s to Under-19s, and including a talented girl’s team, Shooting Stars has seen tremendous growth over the years. What started as a small initiative has blossomed into a force of inspiration and skill in Roodepan.

Many of these players come from disadvantaged backgrounds, where soccer serves as more than just a game – it’s an escape, a source of pride, and a pathway to self-discipline.

Despite the lack of a grass pitch, the Shooting Stars players have proven that resilience and determination can shine through any challenge.

Coach Esel spends countless hours with them on their sand pitch, helping young athletes to remain focused, improve their skills, and stay off the streets. And his approach has been paying off. The players have developed not only as athletes but as individuals, learning life lessons that extend far beyond the soccer field.

Now, with the current season drawing to a close, the club will be hosting its annual award ceremony on Friday, November 1 at 5pm at the Roman Catholic Hall in Roodepan.

During this event the dedication, sportsmanship, and outstanding performances of the players over the past season will be acknowledged. Coach Esel says that the entire community is invited to celebrate the achievements of these young stars who, against all odds, have shown immense talent and perseverance.

Shooting Stars FC’s journey up to this point is a testament to the power of sport in transforming lives. With passion, hard work, and the unwavering support of Coach Esel, the club continues to build a brighter future for the youth of Roodepan, one goal at a time.
