SA Rugby embraces ‘Growing the Game’ transformation with new departmental structure

SA Rugby has completed a major restructuring initiative aimed at promoting greater participation in the sport, particularly at the amateur level.

The reorganisation, which introduces new departments and coaching teams, marks a substantial shift in how the organisation approaches both professional and grassroots rugby.

The restructuring splits the former Rugby and Strategic Performance Management departments into five distinct pillars, each reporting directly to SA Rugby CEO Rian Oberholzer. This change was driven by SA Rugby’s Executive Council, which mandated a reconfiguration to optimise the performance of all national teams while establishing a sustainable pathway for growth and inclusivity at every level of the game.

“Our mandate was clear: to ring-fence the Springboks while restructuring our Rugby Department to ensure it is fit for purpose,” Oberholzer said.

“With the new workstreams and a standalone Springbok department, we are now equipped to enhance performance and participation across the board.”

Key appointments in the new structure

High Performance Department: Led by Dave Wessels, who joined SA Rugby in March, this department will oversee the high-performance strategy across all national teams, with a focus on elevating athletic standards.

Participation and Development Department: Under General Manager Ian Schwartz, this rebranded department now holds the responsibility for growing the game’s player base. With a focus on gender inclusivity and expanding opportunities, this department will create pathways for future generations of players and coaches.

Referees Department: Banks Yantolo has been promoted to General Manager of this newly established department. His team will concentrate on skill development for match officials and address diversity in officiating, ensuring a higher number of trained referees with an emphasis on high performance.

Medical Department: Headed by Clint Readhead, this department will prioritise player welfare, covering aspects of health, safety, wellness, and safeguarding.

The new structure, launched on November 1, is intended to bring targeted expertise to each area, from player health to community rugby development.

Oberholzer highlighted that the Participation and Development Department would be crucial in SA Rugby’s new phase, focusing on gender inclusivity, community engagement, and player development programmes.

“We’re particularly excited about the community impact of the Participation and Development Department,” Oberholzer noted, adding that the department’s remit includes community rugby initiatives, coach training, data management, transformation efforts, and partnership building.

With these changes, SA Rugby is confident in fostering a vibrant, inclusive rugby ecosystem, strengthening South Africa’s position as a global leader in the sport.
