Brave Blitzboks sink Argentina to stay alive in the Singapore Sevens

The Blitzboks spectacularly kept alive their Singapore Sevens aspirations when they upset champions Argentina thanks to a post-hooter try by Zander Reynders.

It was a brave performance by the South Africans against a classy Pumas side that is unaccustomed to defeat and looked to have the game sewn up when they led 24-21 with seconds to go.

But the Blitzboks forced a penalty, and nearly two minutes of attack culminated in Reynders haring after a grubber through the defence, and he won the race to the dot down.

The Pumas went into the game having scored a mammoth 111 tries this season and they were overwhelmingly favoured to beat South Africa.

They scored an early try, but Zain Davids equalised when he finished powerfully in the corner.

The Blitzboks went ahead when Siviwe Soyizwapi outpaced the cover defence down the touchline. The Pumas hit back immediately, but the missed conversion gave the South Africans a 14-12 half-time lead.

That was short-lived as the Pumas scored the first try of the second half.

Dewald Human reclaimed the lead for the Blitzboks with a magnificent solo try from deep in his half. Again, the South Americans fought back and a converted try put them 24-21 ahead with less than two minutes to play, but they could not keep out the gutsy South Africans.

Earlier in the day, the Blitzboks had the worst possible start to their Singapore campaign when they were beaten 38-10 by Great Britain.

A red card to Sebastiaan Jobb inside the first two minutes meant the South Africans were on the back foot for most of the game, and a second-half yellow to Dewald Human didn't help their cause.

To compound the Blitzboks' problems, they lost Donovan Don to injury in the second half after Harry Glover was judged to have played him in the air, a challenge that resulted in a red card for the British captain.

After Jobb was sent off for a dangerous tackle, the Britons wasted no time to exploit their numerical advantage and three minutes later, they led 21-0.

When the Blitzboks managed to get some form of possession, Zain Davids pulled one back, but Great Britain had the final say in the first half with their fourth try to lead 26-5.

Human scored before he was sin binned for a cynical foul and when Glover was sent off, the game lost structure. Great Britain scored their sixth try for a comprehensive 38-10 victory.
