Kumgang Taekwondo students kicking on to new heights
THE KUMGANG Taekwondo Club, situated at the Kimberley Big Hole grounds next to the Occidental Bar, was filled with excitement on Saturday, as students prepared for their highly-anticipated grading.
The club, established in 1999, had grown steadily over the years, producing skilled practitioners of the Korean Martial Art.
The dojo currently has 40 students, between the ages of five and 40 years old. On the day, 11 students –Daniel Anderson, Keegan Kotze, Kiera Kotze, Stephanie de Clrek, Tazkiah Meyers, Johannes Faber, Taheem Boer, Ezekial Mouton, Sumaiyah Toffar, Declyn Koopman, and CJ Speek – were all clad in their crisp white uniforms, eagerly awaiting their turn to demonstrate their abilities.
The grading was a comprehensive test that evaluated students in both the traditional and sport aspects of the Martial Art. It covered a wide range of techniques, including forms, sparring, self-defence, and breaking techniques for the higher belts.
The standard set by the club was high, pushing students to exceed their own perceived limits and constantly improve their skills.
The atmosphere in the dojo was electric as students took turns performing their routines. The instructor, 6th Dan Sabunim Thomas du Plessis, closely observed their technique, offering guidance and corrections along the way. The support from family members was visible throughout the day.
For four of the students, this grading held even more significance, as it marked their final step before their black belt grading, scheduled for the end of the year or early next year.
The pressure to perform well was intense, but they had dedicated countless hours to training and were determined to make this grading a stepping stone toward their ultimate goal.
As the day came to a close, the instructor handed over the new belts. The journey of each student had been unique, filled with challenges, setbacks, and triumphs. But what remained constant was the unwavering spirit and commitment they had all shown.
The Kumgang Taekwondo Club had once again proven its reputation as a hub of excellence in Martial Arts.
The students left the grading hall exhausted but elated, knowing that they had given their all and had grown one step closer to achieving their dreams.
With the support of their instructor, fellow practitioners, and family, they were ready to continue their Taekwondo journey, facing new challenges head-on and embracing the transformative power of this ancient Martial Art.
