A YEAR ago, David Brits made his debut for the Springbok Sevens team at the HSBC SVNS in Perth, marking a significant milestone in his rugby career. For the 27-year-old, who had already represented South Africa at the SA Schools and Junior Springbok levels, donning the Blitzboks jersey was a dream come true.

Now, with more experience under his belt, Brits returns to HBF Park with the aim of building on the team’s recent success and improving on their fifth-place finish in 2024.

Speaking about the upcoming tournament, Brits expressed his enthusiasm:

“It’s exciting indeed – we had a good performance in our last tournament by winning in Cape Town, and although we’ve moved on from that, it showed us what we’re capable of if we focus and execute our plans.”

The fast-paced nature of Perth’s hard, quick fields suits the Blitzboks’ style, and Brits feels confident in the team’s preparation. He also appreciates the local support:

“Perth is a great venue, and the conditions here align well with how we like to play. Training in the heat back home has us ready for these challenges.”

Brits, originally a centre in the traditional 15-a-side game, has transitioned into a front-row role in sevens rugby. This positional shift doesn’t faze him; instead, he sees it as an opportunity to contribute wherever the team needs him.

“It’s where the coach wants me to play, and I’m honoured to serve my country in this position,” he said.

After dealing with injuries, including a broken rib last season, Brits is now fully fit and eager to solidify his spot as a regular starter. He views each opportunity to represent the Blitzboks as a chance to showcase his dedication and passion for the team.

“My main goal is to contribute and ensure we represent the Bok logo with the respect it deserves.”

While Brits has only played in five World Series events, he brings a fresh element to the squad. The Blitzboks’ core group includes seasoned campaigners like Ryan Oosthuizen, Siviwe Soyizwapi, and Zain Davids, all of whom have surpassed 50 tournaments. Impi Visser and Selvyn Davids also bring significant experience to the side.

Brits, however, is unfazed by how much opponents know about him.

“I don’t care what others know or think about me. What matters is giving everything for my team and adding a bit of ‘David’ to the Blitzboks,” he said with a smile.

The Blitzboks enter the Perth tournament riding high after their victory at the Cape Town Sevens. Brits played a pivotal role, scoring the decisive try in the final. Now, he and his teammates are focused on maintaining that momentum.

With leading points scorers like Tristan Leyds and Ricardo Duarttee in fine form, along with Brits’ growing contributions, the Blitzboks are well-positioned for a strong performance in Perth.

As Brits seeks to make more memories on Australian soil, his passion and commitment to the game and his team remain clear. Perth could once again be the stage for him to shine.

Blitzboks leading points scorers (2024/25 season):

Tristan Leyds: 37
