Paul Roos Gymnasium cricket captain Matthew Seymore provided a glimpse into the team’s pre-season preparation ahead of the Diamantveld T20 Cricket Festival.

“We’ve spent time working on specific game situations, improving our plans, and identifying areas for development. Our fielding sessions have been crucial, as we’ve assessed which positions suit us best as individuals and how we can strengthen our teamwork,” Seymore said.

Seymore also highlighted the significance of clear communication between players, coaches, and the captain. “Good communication ensures everyone understands the game plan and their role in it. When the team trusts in the strategy, it allows them to perform at their best.”

As the team looks forward to upcoming tournaments, Seymore hopes to see how they handle pressure and evolve.

“I expect the cricket to be highly competitive, with tough situations that force us to find solutions and grow as a unit,” he said.

“Tournaments like these offer valuable opportunities to learn from other teams, study how they approach different situations, and improve our own game.”

Seymore believes this tournament will be pivotal for Paul Roos Gymnasium cricket, as it provides a platform to experiment with new strategies and showcase the school’s cricketing talent.

“These tournaments allow us to develop as a team, try out different game plans, and promote the values and pride of Paul Roos Gymnasium cricket.”

Meanwhile, Paul Roos Gym senior player, Riley Norton, believes his team is well-prepared and eager to showcase their hard work in the upcoming tournament.

Reflecting on the training regime of the team from Stellenbosch, Norton highlighted the dedication the players put in during the winter season, focusing not only on improving their skills but also deepening their understanding of the game.

“A major part of our preparation has been learning how to adapt to the various challenges that arise throughout a match,” Norton explained to the DFA. “We’ve worked on staying composed during pressure situations, which is something we thrive on as a team.

“Those tight, intense moments are what make sports so exciting, and we embrace the challenge. Staying in the present and focusing on the task at hand helps relieve the pressure of the outcome.”

Looking ahead to the tournament, Norton is excited about the level of competition. “It’s going to be a thrilling event, filled with talented cricketers who play an attacking and exciting brand of cricket. We’ve worked hard to ensure that we have a diverse set of skills, allowing us to adapt to different conditions on the field,” he said.

For Paul Roos, this tournament holds special significance, as it marks the school’s debut in the prestigious event.

“It’s a massive honour for us to compete against some of the best cricketing schools in the country, and we can’t wait to be part of it,” Norton said.
