It always seems like an event when Dewald Brevis strides purposefully to the wicket for the Proteas, but even though he often provides the fireworks his serious talent promises, there  is one big thing still missing from his game and that is consistency.

The 22-year-old has taken some time to find his feet on the international stage with his swashbuckling, aggressive, strokeplay, but he emphatically announced his arrival against Australia with a record-breaking 125 not out in the T20 International clash, in Darwin, in August.

In the following match against Australia four days later, Brevis also notched up his second-best score in the shortest format with a knock of 53.

Considering the opposition, it seemed Brevis had finally worked out how to translate his success at franchise level to the international stage.

Brevis’s Performance: Not There Yet

However, since then Brevis has gone eight innings without scoring over 25 for an average of 15. In this current series against India, Brevis has scored 22,14 and 2.

His scores mirror closely his start to T20Is where in his first eight knocks his best score was 41 and his average was 20.

The thing that separates his start, and current run of underperformance? Those scores of 125 and 53.

That just shows that his incredible displays are currently the exception, and not the norm.

A look at the performances of Brevis at domestic level shows that he’s already played 111 matches, but his average of 28.07 is almost exactly the same as his international average of 28.75. Having played so many matches though, Brevis has scored 11 50s and two centuries. The only big difference seems to be his strike-rate, which is 173 in internationals and 153 on the domestic front.

That seems to indicate that his performances regardless of the level are quite similar at the moment, and the only thing holding back at the moment seems to be experience.
