The rich cricketing tradition of Kimberley was on full display this past weekend as Diamantveld High School hosted its annual T20 Cricket Festival.

The event, which has become a fixture in the city’s sporting calendar, saw teams from 18 schools across the country gathering to showcase their talents and passion for the game.

The hosting school, Diamantveld High School, finished in a credible fifth place, a respectable position for them if you look at the quality of their opposition.

But in the end, there could only be one winner, and this year Hoërskool Garsfontein snatched the trophy away from the defending champions, Hoër Volkskool. During the final match of the tournament at the Kimberley Diamond Oval, Garsfontein set a total of 204/5 in their 20 overs.

Volkies knew that they had a massive task ahead of them and they gave it their all, but after 20 overs, they could only manage to rack up 163 runs for the loss of seven wickets.

It was a monumental victory for Garsfontein. And now they have a year to bask in this glory, knowing that next year, they will need to defend that title when the cricket festival kicks off again.

Throughout the competition, there was an impressive showcase of skill. From precise bowling spells to elegant strokes with the bat, the matches were full of action.

It was clear that many players had finely tuned their abilities, with some performances truly standing out as exceptional.

Some of the standout players were top run-scorer Zandre Nel from Garsfontein, who accumulated 278 runs during the tournament, while Darion Rabie from Grey College took the most wickets, 13 in total. During the tournament, 331 sixes sailed over the boundaries, while 897 fours crossed the ropes.

Festive Atmosphere

Held over four sun-drenched days, the festival drew in eager supporters and family members, all there to cheer on their respective teams and enjoy the festive atmosphere.

It was a celebration of not only cricket but also of camaraderie, sportsmanship, and the enduring love for a sport deeply embedded in the fabric of South African culture.

It was heartening to see the levels of respect, and sportsmanship on display during the tournament. And be assured schools, coaches and players are already looking forward to the next instalment.
