SPORT has practically always been the glue that welded Kimberley, and even the Northern Cape together. Exceptional sporting achievements, successful teams and skilled and dedicated sportsmen and women have been the fabric of the Diamond City and the province.

Historically this has been true, but this has not been relegated to a chapter in history. Even today teams, clubs and individuals have punched above their weight, considering the resources and facilities available to them, and thrived on the local, national and even international stage.

Is it any wonder that the Northern Cape MEC for Sport, Arts and Culture, Mr Mangaliso Matika has recently reached out to encourage and motivate local teams and clubs in their quest for excellence?

Recently, Mr Matika extended his heartfelt support and best wishes to Northern Cape teams as they prepare for important fixtures this weekend across sports codes.

Rugby clash at Suzuki Park

Firstly, the Sol Plaatje University Rugby Team will take to the field against Walter Sisulu University in a Varsity Shield clash at Suzuki Park on Friday, February 20. The match kicks off at 7pm, which means that many of the team’s supporters, rugby fans and Kimberley residents could potentially turn up at the Stadium to cheer the Gemmies on. It promises to be a festive occasion, so remember to purchase those throat lozenges before kick-off.

Sol Plaatje University has set its Varsity Shield Rugby 2026 campaign in motion with a formal send-off and jersey presentation, highlighting institutional backing, academic accountability, and growing confidence as the team prepares for national competition.

Football action in Upington

In football, Upington City Football Club will host Durban City Football Club on Saturday, February 21 at the Mxolisi Dicky Jacobs Stadium in Upington.

A day later, on Sunday February 22, Jacksa Spears from Magareng will face the Cape’s Vasco da Gama in the Round of 16 of the Nedbank Cup, also at the Mxolisi Dicky Jacobs Stadium.

Progressing to this stage of the Nedbank Cup marks a notable point in the competition for Jacksa Spears, and with both Upington City and Jacksa Spears representing the province in significant fixtures this showcases the tenacious qualities of NC teams.

Call for community support

Commenting on the upcoming matches, MEC Matika said: “These fixtures are more than just games; they are a reflection of the talent, resilience and sporting excellence that exists within our province.

“We are proud of our teams and call upon all residents to support them as they compete at the highest levels. Your dedication and hard work continue to inspire the next generation of athletes.”

Additionally, the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture stated that it remains committed to supporting and developing sport across all levels to ensure that athletes have opportunities to compete and excel.

With rugby and football fixtures scheduled across Kimberley and Upington, the weekend presents multiple opportunities for residents to support provincial teams in action, and bring the ‘gees’ that will boost them to exceed and excel.
