MORE than 300 cyclists descended on Laerskool Witpoort for an unforgettable weekend of endurance racing at the Swords Series Pretoria East 2026, held on February 14 and 15.
What unfolded was more than a competition. It was a celebration of grit, family, and community spirit, with riders of all ages taking to the course in a test of stamina and determination.
Over 60 children competed in the Mini Munga, racing their hearts out alongside seasoned endurance athletes. Across the weekend, countless laps were completed as participants pushed themselves to discover just how far they could go.
Organisers described the event as a community gathering as much as a race, with families camping together and supporters cheering riders through long hours in the saddle during the Valentine weekend challenge.
The men’s race delivered a thrilling contest at the top.
Hansie Joubert claimed first place after completing 10 laps in 22 hours, delivering a performance defined by consistency and power. Nico van der Merwe secured second place, also completing 10 laps, finishing just 25 minutes behind Joubert in 22 hours and 25 minutes. Jacques Claassens rounded out the podium, completing 9 laps in 21 hours.
In the women’s race, Machelle Buchel produced a dominant ride to take first place, completing 10 laps in 22 hours and 53 minutes. Martie Joubert finished second with nine laps in 23 hours, while Tindall de Brouwer secured third place after completing eight laps in 22 hours and 14 minutes.
One of the most inspiring stories of the weekend came from Jaco Cromhout's nephew, who completed the full 52-kilometre lap.
Inspired by his uncle, known for both his endurance riding and reflective writing associated with The Munga, the young rider not only finished the demanding course but also penned a poem about his experience.
His achievement embodied the essence of the Swords Series, where the focus extends beyond podium positions to the personal journeys behind each rider’s effort.
As organisers reflected on the weekend, one message stood clear: Swords Series Pretoria East 2026 was not just about racing. It was about heart, resilience, and the stories forged on two wheels.
