THE spirit of women's football was on full display at Vuyolwethu on 14 February as eight clubs gathered for the Diamond Ladies Women's Annual Preseason Tournament, a celebration of the game and a statement of intent ahead of the new season.
Hosted by Diamond Ladies Football Club, the tournament brought together Diamond Ladies, Royal Wizards, Golden Junior City, Sol Plaatje University Ladies, City Ladies from Bloemfontein, Young Achievers, Kimberley Ladies, and Madombidzha Chris United. The day was about more than results. It was about unity, preparation, and building relationships among clubs determined to grow the women's game in the province.
Chairman of Diamond Ladies Football Club, Mbulelo Jack, said the initiative was aimed at testing readiness before league kick-off while also providing a platform for young players to showcase their God-given talent.
“We want to give our young players an opportunity to express themselves and prepare for the coming season,” said Jack. “While we are waiting for the leagues to start, we need to keep ourselves busy and competitive.”
He added that tournaments like these are crucial in strengthening bonds between clubs and fostering healthy competition. Jack also highlighted ongoing challenges, particularly the lack of sponsorship, which makes it difficult for many clubs to sustain themselves in the long term.
“We hope that in the future more business people will buy into the idea of growing women’s football in our province, like it is happening in other provinces,” he said.
Gratitude was extended to the Sol Plaatje Local Football Association for its continued support of women's football. The association currently has five clubs representing it in the provincial leagues: Diamond Ladies FC, Royal Wizards, Kimberley Ladies, Sol Plaatje University Ladies, and newly promoted Young Achievers Ladies.
On the field, the action delivered fitting drama. After a competitive day of fixtures, the final saw Sol Plaatje University Ladies face City Ladies from Bloemfontein. In a tightly contested encounter, Sol Plaatje University Ladies edged their opponents 1 to 0 to claim the 2026 preseason title.
Jack congratulated the champions and thanked the local community for its support throughout the event.
As the countdown to the official league season continues, the tournament serves as both a celebration of love for the game and a clear signal that women's football in the region is steadily moving forward.
