Marco Jansen claimed four wickets to restrict New Zealand to 175/7 after Proteas captain Aiden Markram won the toss and elected to bowl in the ICC T20 World Cup clash at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
The Black Caps were handily placed at 138/4 in the 14th over, but could only manage 37 runs in the remaining six overs for the loss of a further three wickets.
Jansen (4/40) claimed two wickets in the Powerplay, and then returned to pick up a further two, including New Zealand’s top-scorer Mark Chapman (48 off 26 balls).
This allowed the Proteas to put the squeeze on with the recalled Corbin Bosch (1/34) bowling particularly well at the death, bar the two last balls of the innings which Jimmy Neesham (23 not out off 15 balls) hit for consecutive boundaries.
Daryl Mitchell was the only other New Zealand batter to make any meaningful contribution with 32 off 24 balls (2x4, 1x6).
