SOL Plaatje University has officially launched its FNB Varsity Shield Rugby 2026 campaign with a formal jersey presentation and institutional send-off for its rugby team, as previously reported by the DFA.
The event took place on Saturday, 7 February, shortly after the Vice Chancellor’s Official Welcome Ceremony. Led by the Director of Academic Administration, Mr Tobile Gqili, the programme brought together university management, students, and players to formally recognise SPU’s participation in the Varsity Shield and the responsibilities that come with competing on a national stage.
Vice Chancellor and Principal Professor Debra Meyer, supported by members of the executive management, presented the official playing jerseys to the squad. The presentation marked the university’s formal endorsement of the team as it prepares to take on the 2026 Varsity Shield season.
University Registrar and Acting Dean of Students Dr Jody Cedras addressed the players, stressing the importance of maintaining strong academic performance alongside the demands of competitive rugby. He reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to providing structured academic support to ensure student-athletes succeed both in the classroom and on the field.
Speaking on behalf of the team, Vice Captain Tyron China presented Varsity Shield supporter T-shirts to Professor Meyer and the executive management. The gesture symbolised the squad’s commitment to represent the university with discipline, integrity, and pride throughout the competition.
Professor Meyer reflected on the significance of a relatively young institution competing in a national university rugby competition of this scale. She noted that SPU’s continued presence in the Varsity Shield reflects steady institutional growth and forms part of a broader vision to build excellence across academic, student, and sporting life.
The send-off coincided with the national FNB Varsity Cup and Varsity Shield 2026 launch held earlier that day at the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town.
SPU will open their Varsity Shield campaign away against UKZN on Friday, 13 February. The season continues with a home match against WSU on 20 February, followed by away fixtures against CPUT on 27 February and UWC on 6 March. The team will then host UFH on 13 March, travel to face Wits on 20 March, and conclude the round of fixtures with a home encounter against Madibaz on 27 March.
