SPRINGBOK Women’s Sevens coach Cecil Afrika has opted for continuity as South Africa begin their HSBC SVNS 2 campaign in Nairobi, naming a largely tried and tested squad for the opening tournament of the three-event qualification phase.

The squad, which departs for Kenya on Tuesday evening, includes 10 players who were part of the victorious team in Dubai last month. That success at HSBC SVNS 3 ensured South Africa progressed to SVNS 2, with Nairobi hosting the opening leg.

The only changes to the group see Shannon Lee Windvogel in line to make her international debut after earning selection in place of the injured Vianca Boer, while Lerato Makua replaces Zintle Mpupha, who is on provincial duty. Windvogel, a former SWD Eagirls speedster, impressed during the Dubai International Invitational tournament in November and has worked her way back to full fitness after a lengthy injury setback.

Ready for this unique challenge

“I am happy with the squad,” said Afrika. “The players worked really hard over the last couple of weeks to get ready for this competition, and they are determined to do well and start the qualification process on a good note. We prepared well, and we are ready for this unique challenge.”

Afrika believes Windvogel has the potential for a long international career. “She is still young but very talented. If she looks after herself and stays disciplined, she will be with us for a long time. She is very dynamic and fully fit again, which is pleasing to see.”

Makua’s return to the sevens environment also excites the coach. “Lerato is back in the Sevens fray, and she will do well. Her skill set and natural ability will help her adapt quickly, and she will reach her full potential very soon.”

Every match significant

The tournament format in Nairobi will differ from the traditional World Series structure, with all six teams playing each other once and log points determining the standings. Afrika stressed that every match will carry significance, with points difference and bonus points potentially decisive.

South Africa will face Spain, Brazil, and hosts Kenya on Saturday, before matches against China and Argentina on Sunday. Afrika added that familiarity with Nairobi, where the team won the Rugby Africa Women’s Sevens Championship last year, should work in their favour.

The opening match against Spain carries extra motivation after a defeat in Madrid in 2024 contributed to South Africa dropping out of the World Series.
