Brenda Mafunisa makes history as Northern Cape's first CAF-certified professional

BRENDA Mafunisa has made Northern Cape history by becoming the first professional from the province to obtain a qualification recognised by the Confederation of African Football (CAF). She is also one of only five individuals in South Africa to hold this prestigious certification.

Currently serving as the provincial executive officer for the South African Football Association (SAFA) and sitting on several football boards, Mafunisa’s achievement marks a significant milestone in her professional career and highlights her role in advancing football development across the continent.

A continental programme with global reach

Mafunisa was selected among 35 candidates from CAF member associations to participate in the inaugural CAF Football Management Executive Programme. The initiative, aligned with CAF President Patrice Motsepe’s vision of elevating African football to globally competitive and self-sustaining standards, equips participants with advanced skills in governance, administration, and commercial strategy.

The programme leverages CAF’s extensive global network and expertise, offering insights into the evolving relationship between sport, entertainment, and business. Subjects are delivered by industry leaders, including representatives from FIFA, LaLiga, and figures such as David Dein, founder of Arsenal, and Jessica Motuang, with academic support provided by the University of Cape Town.

Professional and community impact

Mafunisa’s participation strengthens her contribution to CAF at a continental level while also enhancing her own professional development. Beyond her administrative duties, she founded the Brenda Mafunisa Foundation, which empowers women through sport and inspires young people in the Northern Cape to pursue ambitious goals.

“Intentionality and perseverance are essential to long-term success,” Mafunisa said, acknowledging the support of the Provincial Executive Committee of the Northern Cape Football Association, the Northern Cape Sports Authority, her family, and all stakeholders investing in football.

She also highlighted the important role of club owners and administrators in shaping local communities, emphasising how grassroots initiatives can influence both social and economic growth. 

Mafunisa says that she draws inspiration from parents who support their children’s sporting ambitions, reinforcing the importance of community in nurturing talent.

Breaking barriers in a male-dominated space

Operating in a traditionally male-dominated environment, Mafunisa has positioned herself as a trailblazer for women in football administration. Her accomplishment reflects the CAF initiative’s goal of developing leadership talent across Africa and demonstrates how determination and resilience can turn professional goals into reality.

To that end, Mafunisa’s qualification not only celebrates individual achievement but also signals progress for football in the Northern Cape, inspiring future generations to reach for similar milestones.
