Hardly a season goes by when a potential Springbok talent is touted, but not nearly as many make it to the highest level - such is the incredible depth in South African rugby at the moment.

With the Springboks having won the last two Rugby World Cup titles, defended their Rugby Championship title, and completed a successful November European Tour, it’s fair to say SA rugby is at its strongest ever.

With established players like Eben Etzebeth, Siya Kolisi, Pieter-Steph Du Toit, Ox Nche, Cheslin Kolbe, and rising stars like Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu, it’s difficult for many youngsters to break into the squad.

One of the best stepping stones for future stars is with the Junior Springboks, and one player that is grabbing headlines is Markus Muller.

Junior Springboks Coach Kevin Foote Discusses Player Pressure and Talent Development

Junior Springboks coach Kevin Foote addressed the pressure players like Muller are under from a young age.

“Hype? That’s the hard thing for these guys. There’s social media and a lot of pressure on this guy. The reality is, he’s on everyone’s highlight reel, but I think he’s got his feet firmly on the ground,” Foote told SportsBoom.co.za.

“We obviously want to keep building him. He just wants to play well. If he keeps playing well, he probably deserves the hype, but I think Markus is more focused on doing his job for the team.”

Naturally, there are a number of players that could go on to represent the Springboks.

“I do see Springbok prospects here,” Foote said.

“Although the Springboks is such a massive step up, these players have done everything they can at their age-group level to put themselves in a position to go further in their careers.

“Our job is to enhance their development so they can take the next step. There is Markus, Ethan [Adams], AJ Meyer, I mean, there is so much talent here.”
