DIAMANTVELD'S Under-19A cricket side produced a commanding all-round display to secure a convincing 62-run victory over St Andrews’ 2nd XI, underlining their discipline and growing authority as a unit.
Asked to bat first on a demanding surface, Diamantveld showed maturity beyond their years. Rather than chasing quick runs, the innings was built patiently, with partnerships carefully assembled despite wickets falling at regular intervals. The ability to absorb pressure proved decisive.
Ruben Viljoen anchored the innings with a composed 54, an effort that brought stability when it was most needed. His measured approach allowed others to play around him and ensured Diamantveld pushed their total into competitive territory. The innings eventually closed at 138 in 38.5 overs — a score that reflected application under challenging conditions.
What followed was a bowling performance that left little doubt about the gap between the sides on the day.
From the opening overs, Diamantveld’s bowlers imposed themselves with accuracy and intent. Tight lines, disciplined lengths and sharp fielding combined to deny St Andrews any opportunity to settle, and the pressure told almost immediately.
Janno du Plessis and Francois Holtzhausen led the charge superbly, each returning figures of 3 for 13. Their control through the middle overs ensured the chase never gathered momentum, while regular wickets kept St Andrews firmly on the back foot.
With runs hard to come by and wickets continuing to fall, the visitors were eventually restricted to 76 for nine in just 20.1 overs, sealing a comprehensive result for Diamantveld.
Beyond the margin of victory, the match stood out for the clarity of Diamantveld’s execution — a performance built on patience with the bat, relentless discipline with the ball, and an understanding of conditions that separated them from their opponents.
The standout performer with the bat was undoubtedly Ruben Viljoen, whose well-composed 54 runs provided stability and direction to the innings.
