KAIZER Chiefs’ narrow victory over ZESCO United may already be filed away as old news, but the significance of that result continues to shape the mood around the club’s CAF Confederation Cup campaign.
The 1-0 win at Moses Mabhida Stadium lifted Amakhosi to seven points in Group D and extended their unbeaten run to six matches in all competitions. More importantly, it kept qualification firmly within reach with two group matches remaining.
Glody Lilepo’s early strike proved decisive on the day, while Chiefs showed enough control to see out the contest and end ZESCO’s involvement in the competition. The Zambian side now sit bottom of the group without a point.
While the scoreline was tight, the performance offered encouraging signs, particularly in terms of squad depth and individual contributions.
Former Kaizer Chiefs striker Thembinkosi Biyela believes there is little for the Soweto giants to fear as they approach the closing stretch of the group phase.
Currently level on points with Egyptian outfit Al Masry, Chiefs’ route to the knockout rounds remains clear. According to Biyela, four points from the final two matches would be enough to progress.
"Only four points are needed from the remaining two games to qualify,” Biyela said, speaking to KickOff.
“This can be achieved through a single win and a draw. The team should focus on securing victories in their own matches, as that will ultimately determine their progression."
Biyela also pointed to the importance of squad management, particularly with ZESCO expected to play with less pressure in their remaining fixtures.
"With such a sizable squad, Chiefs have the capacity to advance. It is essential for the team to rotate their players effectively and avoid relying on the same line-up for each match."
One of the standout figures in recent matches has been Lebohang Maboe, whose impact off the bench against ZESCO nearly produced a moment of magic when his long-range effort struck the crossbar.
His form has not gone unnoticed by co-coach Cedric Kaze, who praised the former Mamelodi Sundowns player’s versatility and experience.
"Maboe has an amazing football IQ - he can play as a 6, 8 or 10," Kaze said at a recent media briefing.
"He can even play as a winger because he knows how to find the half spaces. He is accurate in front of the box and has a very good shot."
Kaze also highlighted Maboe’s value beyond his on-field contributions.
"He is a hard worker. It is a very good thing to have him, and he adds experience to our Confederation Cup squad. He is able to advise the younger players and all his teammates."
With domestic duties next against Stellenbosch FC in the Nedbank Cup, Chiefs now face a defining period — one where recent momentum, squad depth and belief could determine how far their continental journey continues.
