NORMAN Football Club is marking 16 years since its formation in 2010, a milestone that reflects more than longevity, but a sustained commitment to using football as a tool for social development and opportunity.

Founded during the year South Africa hosted the FIFA World Cup, the Colville- and Floors-based club was established with a purpose that extended beyond competition. Team manager and executive committee member Sydney Norman said the aim from the outset was to combat social ills through sport, while ensuring young players remained focused on education and personal growth.

That philosophy continues to shape the club’s structure today. Norman Football Club works with children from as young as six years old and currently competes in the Sol Plaatje Development League. The club fields Under-11, Under-13, Under-15 and Under-17 teams, alongside a girls’ team, placing strong emphasis on nurturing talent from the grassroots level.

Norman Football Club celebrates 16 years of grassroots development in Colville and Floors, nurturing young talent, promoting education through sport, and producing players progressing to elite pathways in South African football. Seen here is Leonay Kock who is currently in her second year at the SAFA Girls High Performance Centre in Pretoria, having started her football journey at Norman Football Club at the age of eight.

According to Norman, working with boys and girls at such formative ages has always been a personal dream, with the focus not only on developing football skills but also on building discipline, confidence and leadership.

Sixteen years on, the club is beginning to see clear examples of that long-term vision bearing fruit.

Among those recognised as part of the anniversary reflections is Leonay Kock, who began her football journey at Norman Football Club at the age of eight. She is now in her second year at the SAFA Girls High Performance Centre in Pretoria, a progression the club has described as a reward for her hard work, persistence and dedication.

Jemoniva Kock followed a similar pathway, also starting his development at the club before progressing to Magesi, where he currently competes in the DStv Development Soccer League in Gauteng.

These success stories, the club believes, underline the importance of sustained grassroots development and reinforce its commitment to producing more players capable of reaching higher and elite levels of the game.

Looking ahead, Norman Football Club has opened its doors to new players between the ages of six and 16 from surrounding areas including Colville, Floors, Squarehill Park and Homestead. At the same time, the club has appealed to stakeholders and potential sponsors for support with playing attire, equipment and soccer boots, noting that any assistance would help strengthen its development programmes.

As it reflects on 16 years of work in the community, the club’s message is clear: meaningful progress in football, much like in life, starts early and is built patiently over time.

To support its ongoing development efforts, Norman Football Club has also expressed openness to partnerships with stakeholders willing to assist with equipment, playing kits and soccer boots.
