What started as a minor stumble has grown heavier with each passing fixture, leaving an uncharacteristic Stellenbosch FC still searching for the rhythm that once defined them.
Nestled along one of the world’s oldest wine routes — a region celebrated for centuries of excellence and innovation — Stellenbosch has yet to mirror that heritage on the pitch. Yet, there is hope that the resumption of the season could signal a turning point.
That hope comes not just with the new year and its promise of a fresh start, but also with the arrival of Gavin Hunt as head coach. His energy, tactical knowledge and leadership are seen as vital following Steve Barker’s departure to Tanzanian side Simba SC.
There is light at the end of the tunnel for Stellies. Despite a rocky start to their campaign, their participation in the Caf Confederation Cup and their position in the Betway Premiership — just nine points behind eighth-placed TS Galaxy — offer hope for a strong finish once league action resumes after the international break.
With so much at stake, the focus now turns to the Maroons' next three fixtures and the unique challenges each match will present.
The campaign resumes with a tough away league fixture against a solid Babina Noko side. Hunt’s men face an early test of their progress, and the challenge is compounded by having to perform on the road.
The two sides have already met this season in the semi-finals of the MTN8, with the Barker-led Stellenbosch side managing a draw and a convincing 2–0 win over the Limpopo-based outfit in a two-legged affair. This will be Hunt’s second trip to the province; his previous visit with Durban City ended in a 2–0 loss. However, his wealth of experience and ability to adapt tactics on the fly could prove crucial in securing a season-defining result.
Continental competition has been one of the few bright spots this season for Stellies, with one win and a draw from their opening two Confederation Cup fixtures. Their upcoming clash with CR Belouizdad promises to be their toughest yet, as the Algerian side currently sits third in their group and second in their domestic league.
The two-legged tie begins away from home, presenting a stern challenge for the Cape side. Hunt’s experience on the continental stage—most recently with Kaizer Chiefs in the Champions League—could prove invaluable in navigating these high-pressure encounters.
Although further down the calendar, the encounter with Magesi FC carries significant weight for Hunt and his troops. With just one point separating the two sides, this will be Stellenbosch’s second league fixture of the year and their first at home following the postponement of their match against Golden Arrows.
Home form has been inconsistent this season, and establishing dominance at Danie Craven Stadium will be critical. A strong performance against a side struggling with confidence could be an essential step in building momentum for the remainder of the campaign.
