When Bafana Bafana’s AFCON campaign ended on Sunday, their road to redemption at the upcoming FIFA World Cup finals in North America officially began.

Bafana were not at their best during the tournament. Much was expected of them following their third-place finish in the previous edition in Ivory Coast, and there were early signs that they could emulate the victorious "Class of ’96". Regardless, they cannot afford to look backwards now; they must ensure they are ready to put on a clinical display at the World Cup.

Based on performances in Morocco, we look at the players who have all but secured their tickets to the global showpiece, and those who are likely to miss out on the world’s biggest stage.

Tickets Secured

Ronwen Williams

Williams has been the cornerstone of the Bafana team, leading by example both on and off the field during the Hugo Broos era. His exploits have earned him continental and international recognition, including being crowned Africa’s Best Goalkeeper two seasons ago and receiving nominations for the World’s Best Goalkeeper award for two consecutive seasons.

While those accolades highlight his immense growth, it was the AFCON gold medal Williams yearned for most this season. Although he fell short, the Gqeberha-born goalkeeper once again proved why he remains one of the best in the world. He was exceptional throughout the tournament — from his reflexes and one-on-one duels to his command of the defence.

Mbekezeli Mbokazi

There are few teenage sensations on the continent as impressive as Mbokazi. Nicknamed after the "TLB" (Tractor Loader Backhoe) due to his versatility, Mbokazi has embodied the moniker, proving efficient in both defence and attack. The 20-year-old’s upward trajectory is so steep that his recent move to MLS side Chicago Fire divided opinion, with some questioning if the timing was right. However, after his exploits at AFCON, there is no doubt that Mbokazi is one of the world's most exciting young players to watch.

Teboho Mokoena

When Mokoena nearly became the reason for a disqualification after being fielded while ineligible against Lesotho, the nation held its breath. Despite that drama, he has been one of Bafana’s standout performers under Broos. Shielding the defence, linking play, and threatening from distance, Mokoena was unlucky not to register a goal in Morocco. He came agonisingly close with a sensational free kick in the 2–1 loss to Cameroon. It would be no surprise if Mokoena continues to attract high-profile suitors ahead of the World Cup.

Set to Miss Out

Elias Mokwana

When Mokwana was a surprise inclusion in the final squad, expectations were high. However, he failed to make an impact in his cameo appearances, appearing aimless on the flanks and lacking bite in the final third. His lacklustre performances have fuelled criticism of Broos, with many feeling in-form players were overlooked in favour of the struggling winger.

Ricardo Goss

Goss was one of the most experienced players in the setup, but his form has declined to the point that he is no longer the assured number one at Siwelele. With the second half of the domestic season being crucial for his career, he faces a "make or break" period to salvage his international future.

Khulumani Ndamane

Ndamane has grown significantly at TS Galaxy over recent months, boasting a deft left foot that allows him to operate as a left-back or centre-back. However, having slipped down the pecking order for the national team, he will need to focus on further improvement to claw his way back into regular contention.
