Since the 2025 AFCON began on December 21, the continental showpiece has delivered its fair share of subplots, incidents, and talking points. As AFCON enters the knockout phase, we examine five key talking points.

Free entry initiative

AFCON host Morocco adopted an innovative approach to enhance matchday experiences and address low ticket sales. Applicable to fixtures with lower demand, fans were admitted to stadiums free of charge 20 minutes after matches began. In one case, the DR Congo versus Benin crowd doubled from 6 703 to 13 073.

The move highlights Morocco’s proactive approach to enhancing the fan experience. It addresses the logistical challenges of hosting large-scale events, positioning the nation as a progressive leader in African football.

Zidane snubs France

The move took world football by storm after Luca Zidane, son of the legendary Zinedine Zidane, announced his decision to represent Algeria at AFCON. He is eligible to play for France, who famously lifted the World Cup with his father in 1998.

Born to one of the sport’s most celebrated figures, Luca Zidane found himself in the shadows of his father’s towering achievements. “When I think about Algeria, I think about my grandfather. Algerian culture has always been part of my family since I was a child,” Luca shared in a statement, revealing the profound connection he feels towards his paternal lineage.

Diallo rakes in awards

Ivory Coast’s Amad Diallo is generating significant buzz at the 2025 tournament, standing out as the only player to earn two Man of the Match accolades thus far in the tournament. The young winger, who plies his trade with Manchester United, has been a decisive force for his national team, showcasing both skill and determination on the pitch.

This feat is a testament to the rising star’s impact and growing influence as he seeks to guide the Ivory Coast to success. In just two matches, Diallo has not only contributed two crucial goals to his team’s efforts, but he has also captivated audiences and analysts alike with his flair and tactical awareness.

Mokoena’s gone missing

Midfielder Teboho Mokoena was once Bafana Bafana’s shining star, who led the team to a commendable third-place finish two years ago. However, this time around, Mokoena’s performances have been less impressive, leaving fans questioning whether he can rediscover the form that had previously elevated him to stardom.

His contributions appear lacking, and many feel he is not fully engaged in the rhythm of the matches, which is concerning for fans who remember his past excellence. Coach Hugo Broos and the entire squad will hope the player can find the extra gears needed to elevate his performance and galvanise the team going forward.

Egypt fined $5 000

CAF has fined Egypt’s national football team $5 000 for failing to meet media obligations after their opening AFCON match against Zimbabwe. According to a CAF statement, Egypt’s players and technical staff bypassed the designated mixed zone after the final whistle, declined to grant interviews, and did not engage with reporters, thereby violating tournament regulations.

CAF underscored the importance of adhering to media obligations, noting that making players and officials available for interviews is crucial to transparency and effective promotion of the tournament. Egypt’s upcoming matches will see increased scrutiny regarding their adherence to media protocols.
