The Joburg Super Kings registered a second consecutive victory away from home when they beat Durban’s Super Giants by six wickets at Kingsmead Stadium in Durban on Tuesday.

The Super Kings put on a dominant performance in Durban, taking the hosts apart in front of their home fans at a packed Kingsmead Stadium. Prenelan Subrayen, the Durban-based finger spinner who now plies his trade for the Johannesburg-based Super Kings, had the hosts in his spin web.

Knowing the conditions very well as a local boy, the off-spinner led the Super Kings bowling attack beautifully, helping to bowl out the hosts for a meagre 86. Subrayen (3/16) accounted for the Super Giants' top three: the opening pair of Devon Conway (4) and Kane Williamson (2), and England’s Jos Buttler (12), reducing the hosts to 21/3 inside the opening five overs of the clash.

Aiden Markram (22) and Evan Jones (15) fought hard for a short while, trying to build a substantial partnership; however, the visiting bowling attack was clinical on the day, with fast bowler Richard Gleeson (3/2) doing the damage to set up a sparkling victory for the Joburg Super Kings.

Akeal Hosein, Donovan Ferreira, Duan Jansen, and Wiaan Mulder took a wicket apiece, helping the visitors send a chilling message to all teams in the new SA20 season.

In reply, the experienced top-order batter Rilee Rossouw led from the front with the bat, playing a mature knock to help the visitors chase the low total with 46 balls to spare. With such a low score on the board, the Super Giants would have been hopeful for a miracle as they started their bowling innings with the wickets of Faf du Plessis (3), Matthew de Villiers (7), and Mulder (1) cheaply and inside the first powerplay.

Despite the promising start, Rossouw (43) and Shubham Ranjane (15 not out) were just too strong with the bat, sinking Durban’s Super Giants with a bonus-point, six-wicket victory in what was a low-scoring clash that saw only two sixes.

Durban’s Super Giants will now look to return to winning ways, having beaten the defending champions in the tournament opener in Cape Town last week. On the other hand, the Joburg Super Kings will hope to continue their winning streak ahead of their first home game in Johannesburg on Thursday.
