In the aftermath of Bafana Bafana’s nervy 3-2 AFCON win over Zimbabwe, coach Hugo Broos has ramped up his clarion call for solid defensive play.

After the match, the whirlwind of celebration in the South African camp had hardly settled when Broos’s intense scrutiny of the team’s defensive performance highlighted significant concerns that could impede their progress in the competition. The match kicked off on a high note for South Africa, with Tshepang Moremi striking early in the 7th minute to send a wave of excitement through the supporters.

Yet, the optimism was abruptly dampened just before half-time when Zimbabwe’s Tawanda Maswanhise netted the equaliser, leaving Broos visibly frustrated as he faced his players in the dressing room.

“We started very well in the game, we had chances, and we scored, so everything was okay,” Broos explained in his post-match analysis.

“Then, suddenly, we fell asleep again and conceded a goal to go to half-time 1-1. So, we talked to the players and said, ‘Guys, come on, just do what you… like how you started the game.’”

After a spirited talk during the break, Bafana Bafana found their rhythm again, with Lyle Foster restoring their lead, followed by a crucial penalty conversion from Oswin Appollis that sealed the match. However, Broos was unsatisfied with the recurring defensive lapses that put his team in jeopardy.

“The circulation of the ball was good until we scored through Moremi,” he remarked. “For one reason or another, we made the same mistakes as in the previous games: bad passes and not taking the correct positions anymore.

"That way, you allow the opponent to be dangerous. If you look at how they scored their first goal, the player [Maswanhise] ran through three or four of our players without a tackle. If you continue to defend like this, then you will concede goals every game. This habit must stop.”

Broos’s emphasis on defensive discipline is particularly crucial as Bafana prepares for the high-stakes Round of 16 match, which could be on Sunday in Rabat. Finishing second in Group B with six points, the team must tighten their backline to avoid a repeat of the errors that have plagued it thus far.

Determined to turn things around, Broos has just six days to implement vital changes to bolster the team’s performance in the knockout stage. With their sights set on progressing further in the tournament, Bafana Bafana must balance the attacking flair they exhibited earlier in the competition with a newfound focus on defensive integrity.

Mzansi will be watching closely to see if their team can overcome these obstacles and mount a serious challenge for the AFCON title.
