Despite being on the losing side, Mbekezeli Mbokazi more than held his own in Bafana Bafana’s Africa Cup of Nations clash against Egypt on Friday.

Bafana Bafana may have gone down 1-0 to Egypt in their Africa Cup of Nations clash on Friday, but the team left the field with their heads held high.
Hugo Broos’ men have a right to feel they were robbed during the encounter after Egypt were awarded a dubious penalty and had one denied to them late on. VAR just wasn’t on South Africa’s side on the day.
One man who will be happy with his performance is Mbekezeli Mbokazi, who for the first time in his short career, faced some of the world’s top attackers in Mohammed Salah and Omar Marmoush and more than held his own.
In the 24th minute of the game, he times his challenge perfectly in the 18-yard area to snuff out an Egyptian attack. And after winning the ball, he remained calm to launch Bafana’s own attack from the back.
The 20-year-old former Orlando Pirates defender was dominant in the air, and solid on the ground, winning six tackles and making four clearances. He also managed to find a teammate with 84% of his passes.
Performances of that calibre inevitably fuel debate about Mbokazi’s long-term trajectory, particularly in light of his move to MLS. Broos himself has publicly suggested the timing may not have been ideal, pointing out after the defender’s late arrival to camp that greater patience could have opened the door to more lucrative or competitive options after the 2026 World Cup. Friday’s showing against elite opposition only added weight to that argument.
While the scoreboard will forever reflect a defeat, performances like Mbokazi’s offered a timely reminder that Bafana Bafana’s rebuild is built on substance rather than sentiment. On a night shaped by contentious decisions and fine margins, South Africa had a defender who looked entirely at home against elite opposition, suggesting that brighter days lie ahead.
If Friday was any indication, Mbokazi’s journey is only just beginning – and Bafana’s future, despite the setback, may be far more promising than the result suggests.
