Zimbabwe’s preparations for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) have taken a significant hit with the unexpected withdrawal of key midfielder Andy Rinomhota just hours before their opening match against seven-time champions Egypt.
The Reading FC player has cited an urgent family matter as the reason for his departure from the national team camp in Morocco.
In a heartfelt statement, Rinomhota expressed his disappointment over missing the prestigious tournament.
“I am deeply gutted to miss out on a tournament of this magnitude. Representing Zimbabwe at the highest level has always been a source of pride. While I was fully committed to this opportunity, the timing of this family matter means I am not in the right psychological state to give the team my very best.”
The withdrawal of Rinomhota is a blow to coach Mario Marinica, who now has one less player in his midfield, which includes Marvellous Nakamba, Jonah Fabisch, Prosper Padera, Tawanda Chirewa, and captain Knowledge Musona.
As Zimbabwe faces an uphill battle against a formidable Egyptian side, the absence of Rinomhota, known for his tenacity and skill, raises questions about their ability to mount a serious challenge.
ZIFA, the Zimbabwe Football Association, issued a statement confirming Rinomhota’s release from the squad and affirming its support for the player’s decision.
“Following discussions with the player, the technical team and the Association agreed to the request in the best interests of all parties.
“ZIFA respects and supports the player’s decision and appreciates the professional manner in which he handled the matter.”
They stated that Rinomhota remains part of the national setup and expressed hope for his swift return once he resolves family matters.
While the squad now faces the challenge of moving forward without a crucial player, they will need to regroup quickly.
Zimbabwe’s first game kicks off on Monday against Egypt, followed by a match against Angola on Boxing Day, before concluding group play against their long-time rivals, South Africa, three days later.
