Tanzanian giants Simba SC have shocked fans of Stellenbosch FC by announcing that they’ve secured the services of Steve Barker as their new head coach.
In a statement released on Friday, Simbab announced that Barker will replacing Dimitar Pantev who was sacked last month due to poor performances by the club.
“The club’s board has reached an agreement to appoint Steve Robert Barker as the head coach of our team for a period of two years,” the club said in a statement released on Friday.
“Barker, a South African citizen, has joined our squad from Stellenbosch FC in South Africa. Coach Barker holds an A license from the European Football Association (UEFA) as well as an A license from the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
The Tanzanian club went on to add that Barker will arrive with four assistants.
Barker, nephew of the late Clive Barker, has been in charge of Stellenbosch FC since 2017, and many had speculated he would be moving on to one of South Africa’s bigger clubs after excelling with the Cape Winelands club.
Despite finishing third in the Betway Premiership for the last two seasons, they’ve struggled to get going this season, and are involved in a relegation fight near the bottom of the league.
Barker’s exit leaves Stellenbosch FC facing a defining period, with questions now being asked about their immediate direction and long-term stability as they battle near the foot of the table.
IOL Sport contacted Stellenbosch FC for comment, but had not received a response at the time of publication.
