Fresh of their Carling Knockout title win over the weekend, Orlando Pirates now to need focus all their efforts on winning the league, according to former Buccaneer Lucky Lekgwathi.

Pirates beat Marumo Gallants in the final of the cup competition over the weekend, and also find themselves atop the Betway Premiership summit heading into the festive season break.

The Soweto Giants top the bale with 28 points from 12 games, two points ahead of Mamelodi Sundowns who have 26 points having played a match more than Pirates.

Sundowns, of course, have won the last eight league titles in a row. If any side were to break the stranglehold of the Brazilians it would have to be Pirates believed Lekgwathi.

Orlando Pirates Aim for League Glory After MTN8 and Carling Knockout Victories

“To win the MTN8 and other trophies is good, but Orlando Pirates supporters want to win the league. Even now, as they are sitting in first position, they do not want to make the same mistake as last season, losing all the games they had in hand,” Lekgwathi told SportsBoom.co.za.

It was a first-ever Carling Knockout title for Pirates and adds to the MTN8 trophy they won two months ago, in what is quickly becoming a season to savour.

“Winning two trophies with just half of the season gone is a good achievement.

“Credit must start with the leadership of the team. They assembled a good squad; every position has about three or four players, which is good because it creates healthy competition in the team and makes the coach’s job easy.”
