The Proteas have recorded a magical 30-run victory over India at Eden Gardens on the third morning of the first Test on Sunday.
Keshav Maharaj claimed two wickets back-to-back to dismiss India for 93 all out. Maharaj was struck for two sixes and a boundary earlier in the over, but hit back when he had Axar Patel (26) brilliantly caught by Temba Bavuma before last-man Mohammed Siraj was caught at slip.
India captain Shubnam Gill could not bat as he is currently in hospital under observation.
Simon Harmer did the majority of the damage with figures of 4/21 to put the Proteas' in pole position to record a memorable win.
Marco Jansen had also claimed two early wickets that put India on the back foot.
Earlier, captain Bavuma showed all the fighting qualities that has made him an admired leader with a gritty unbeaten 55 to lift the Proteas to 153 - an overall lead of 123. The skipper spent just over three hours at the crease and faced 136 deliveries.
It was the cornerstone of the Proteas' first victory in India for 15 years, and first at Eden Gardens since 1996.
"A little bit of nerves [after being hit for two sixes and a four]. I just wanted to be clear with my plans. Luckily I got the rewards; was a brilliant catch by Temba and we got back," said Maharaj.
The left-arm spinner was full of praise for his spin partner Harmer.
"He was phenomenal, he showed his class, he showed why he has 1000 FC wickets. It's a privilege to bowl alongside him. Take nothing away from Marco Jansen as well. What a team effort, there has been exceptional team effort as well. Really great desire to get of the line, and we did."
Maharaj believes the Proteas' performance in Pakistan preceding this tour had set them up for this victory.
"We took a lot of confidence from that series. In India, it is a different, these guys have different skillsets. To tick the first box on this tour was phenomenal.
"There was a ball very much so with your name on it. Simon showed the consistency more than me. Also the faith Temba showed in us, a lot of credit to him. We have not ticked this [India] assignment. We want to go forward and we can be really thrilled with what we have achieved."
