CRICKET is not only a sport but also a source of joy and community for Thato Moholeng.
Born in Kuruman in the Northern Cape, Thato discovered his love for cricket in Grade 6, not on a playgrond, but behind a desk during a life orientation class. What began as curiosity quickly grew into passion, shaping his journey as a cricketer and inspiring him to pursue the sport at increasingly higher levels.
One of Thato’s proudest moments came during last year’s USSA tournament, where he claimed a five-for against the University of Limpopo. The performance showcased his talent and determination and remains a highlight of his growing cricket career. Looking ahead, he dreams of playing at the iconic Lord’s Cricket Ground in England, a venue that for him would represent the pinnacle of achievement in the sport.
But though the action may take place on the pitch, cricket happens in the mind, and in the spirit. So, to prepare mentally before matches, Thato finds focus and motivation by listening to his favourite music, especially tracks by Eminem. This helps him centre himself and build the confidence he will need on the field.
Known for his engaging personality as much as his cricketing ability, he describes himself as kind, extroverted, and a music lover, and he wants the Kimberley crowd to know that he always makes cricket fun to watch.
Thato’s academic journey at Sol Plaatje University, meanwhile, has been an eye-opening and rewarding experience. Beyond cricket, university life has offered him opportunities to learn, grow, and connect with teammates and fellow students, fostering both personal and athletic development.
Through his infectious energy, skill, and love for the game, Thato continues to make an impact on and off the field. His story is one of enthusiasm, perseverance, and a desire to inspire those around him, proving his belief that that beyond a sport, cricket is a source of joy and community.
