South Africa kicked off their FIFA Under-17 World Cup campaign in style, beating Bolivia 3-1 at the Aspire Zone in Al Rayyan, Qatar.
Despite being reduced to 10 men after Sive Pama was sent off following a VAR review of a heavy tackle in the 36th minute, South Africa closed ranks and showed composure and grit.
Just two minutes later, Kimberley-born Emile Witbooi broke the deadlock. Played through by a teammate, and one-on-one with Bolivia goalkeeper Geronimo Govea, Witbooi’s initial shot rebounded after it struck the post – but he stayed calm under pressure, as two defenders tried to regain possession for the Bolivians, and he slotted home the rebound and give his side the lead.
Meanwhile, fresh legs counted as substitute Alwande Booysen made an immediate impression after coming on, delivering a pinpoint low cross for Neo Bohloko to score South Africa’s second. The Kaizer Chiefs forward’s goal was his 16th in 33 appearances for the national Under-17 side.
Bolivia responded through Jesus Maraude’s Panenka-style penalty, but Booysen again proved decisive, racing into space before setting up Shaun Els for a tap-in that sealed the win.
