Passion, purpose, and perseverance are driving forces behind Porto Football Club, affectionately known as PJ Stars, a community team from Greenpoint in Kimberley that continues to shine brighter with every step forward.

Founded in 2023 by a small group of soccer enthusiasts from Diamond Park, Porto FC has quickly become a beacon of hope for young people in the area. Roughly four months ago, club chairman Ronaldo van Wyk reached out, asking for items that the team needed as a matter of relative urgency. The needs ranged from basic soccer kits, balls, training equipment, and also for help with transport costs to and from games and practices.

Van Wyk had emphasised at the time that the club was not looking for handouts, but for partnerships from individuals or any local businesses.

The good news is that in the wake of the report in the DFA, the club recently received a major boost. A sponsorship was announced that provided the team with a brand-new soccer kit – a gesture that has sparked renewed energy and motivation among players and supporters alike.

Generous sponsorship

The club’s chairman was excited saying, “On behalf of Porto Football Club, a huge thank you to Mr Mathoho Phathutshedzo who works for the Department of Employment and Labour as a Deputy Director COID services. His generous sponsorship has provided our team with a brand-new soccer kit.

“Your kindness will help us work harder and play better this upcoming season. We at Porto FC are so grateful for your support,” he added.

“We would also like to thank local community member Obakeng Chukulwane, who has been instrumental in nurturing young talent, and for his donations to the club. Your support has been instrumental in our progress and has made a significant impact,” said van Wyk.

“We also call on the ward councillor from Diamond Park to come forth and assist us in any way possible,” he continued.

For the youth of Diamond Park, football is about more than just the game. On dusty fields where dreams take shape, these determined youngsters are chasing not only a football but also purpose, discipline, and hope.

Despite the positive momentum, Porto FC still faces challenges. As mentioned earlier, the club urgently needs basic training equipment such as soccer balls, and reliable transportation to help players attend matches and practices.

Van Wyk remains optimistic about the journey ahead, echoing his faith in both the team and the future:

“When the time is right, I, the Lord, will make it happen,” said Van Wyk, quoting a Bible verse from memory..

Those who wish to support or learn more about the club’s growing mission are encouraged to reach out. Porto FC welcomes partnerships, sponsorships, or any form of assistance to help keep the flame of community football burning brightly in Diamond Park.
