Mhlengie Prince Ngwenya’s cricket journey began in a strange way. He was just eight years old when a coach spotted him playing football on the streets. The coach must have seen something in the young boy, because he introduced Mhlengie to cricket.
From that moment, cricket became a central part of his life, shaping his discipline, focus, and passion for the game. Over the years, the passion has not faded. These days, to prepare mentally before matches, he takes a moment to pray, centering himself and finding focus for the game ahead.
Born in Klerksdorp, one of Mhlengie’s proudest moments came while playing for the North West Under-19 team in the NPL, where he competed alongside and against some of the region’s most talented players. For this young man, it was an experience that reinforced his love for cricket and inspired him to continue striving for excellence.
Asked which ground he’d like to play on if given the choice, he had no hesitation to say that playing at Lord’s Cricket Ground in England, the iconic home of cricket is a dream.
Mhlengie describes himself as determined, passionate, and humble, and makes it clear that he never gives up, always plays with respect, and gives his all for the team and supporters.
As for his academic journey he says that his experience at Sol Plaatje University has been incredible. Balancing academics with cricket has challenged him, but the support from coaches and teammates has helped him grow both as a player and as a student.
Grateful for the opportunities he has received, Mhlengie continues to work toward his future while proudly representing SPU on the cricket field.
