South Africa Wheelchair Rugby (SAWCR) have claimed gold at the 2025 Euro Division C Championship in Skien, Norway – a major step toward Paralympic qualification.
The four-day tournament, held from October 9 to 12, saw the South Africans face off against hosts Norway and the Republic of Ireland. In a decisive final, SAWCR overpowered Ireland 62-29 to be crowned European Division C champions.
As a result, the team – rezoned earlier this year from the Asia-Oceania Conference to Europe Division C – has earned promotion to compete in Europe Division B in 2026.
“On behalf of SA Rugby, I would like to congratulate SA Wheelchair Rugby for their performances in Norway. We are very proud of them,” said Mr Mark Alexander, President of SA Rugby.
“They have made a remarkable comeback in 2025, showing strong performance and renewed ambition on the international stage, with the ultimate prize, participation in the Paralympic Games, edging closer.
“What makes their performances even more impressive is that they only re-entered international competition structures after a decade-long absence. Winning in Norway is a big step in the right direction, and we believe our team will soon enter the global top tier of wheelchair rugby sides.”
SAWCR, an associate member of SA Rugby, were lauded both for their on-court success and the resilience shown in rebuilding the programme after years away from the international scene.
In an earlier statement, the organisation said: “We are incredibly proud of our national team. They entered the competition well-prepared and received exceptional coaching from Gary Burnard.”
Known for its rapid pace and full-contact intensity, wheelchair rugby combines elements of rugby, basketball and handball. Players aim to carry the ball across the opponent’s try line using specially designed wheelchairs with reinforced frames, making it the only mixed-gender full-contact sport in the Paralympic Games.
With their victory in Skien, South Africa Wheelchair Rugby’s next goal is clear – to build toward Europe Division B in 2026, and ultimately, a place at the Paralympic Games.
