SA Rugby President Mark Alexander has praised the South African Rugby Legends Association (SARLA) for hosting another outstanding Under-15 Iqhawe Week, which took place in Oudtshoorn from October 5 to 9.

The annual youth tournament, held at Langenhoven Gymnasium, showcased the best emerging talent from across South Africa. All 15 provincial unions were represented, along with a South Western Districts (SWD) XV side, in a week-long celebration of grassroots rugby development.

The event concluded on a high note when Border Under-15 claimed the unofficial champion title after a spirited victory over Western Province in the final match.

Alexander commended SARLA for its unwavering commitment to promoting rugby in underrepresented communities, particularly among small, rural, and non-traditional schools.

“SA Rugby is proud to be associated with SARLA. Their dedication and efforts to grow and develop rugby within our ecosystem are truly commendable,” said Alexander.

He also paid tribute to SARLA chairperson Gavin Varejes and his team for their continued investment in youth rugby through initiatives such as the Iqhawe Week and the Vuka Programme.

“These Legends have given so much back to the game, both on and off the field. Their support for the next generation is a powerful reminder of rugby’s enduring spirit and the strength of our shared legacy,” Alexander added.

He further expressed gratitude to the SWD Rugby Union and its president, Ben Brinkhuis, for their hospitality and assistance during the tournament.

“A sincere thank you to SWD and Mr. Brinkhuis – your support and hospitality are greatly appreciated. It was wonderful to bring our game to that part of the world,” he said.

The 2025 Iqhawe Week featured teams from Eastern Province, SWD, Griquas, Border, SWD XV, Western Province, Boland, Pumas, Golden Lions, Valke, Griffons, Sharks, Leopards, Blue Bulls, and Limpopo Blue Bulls.

The Iqhawe Week continues to serve as an important platform for identifying and nurturing young rugby talent from communities where access to formal rugby structures is often limited, reaffirming SA Rugby’s commitment to inclusivity and development at all levels of the game.
