Kimberley’s Blade Shotokan made its national debut at the 41st IFFSK National Championship, representing the Northern Cape for the first time, and what an unforgettable debut it turned out to be.

Twenty-one students from the club competed in the championship held in Durban under IFFSK President Hanshi Eric Governder, demonstrating the discipline, focus, and respect that karate demands and proving their province could match South Africa’s top competitors.

The results exceeded all expectations. Blade Shotokan returned home with 25 medals, securing fifth place in the national Top 10 rankings. The haul included nine gold, nine silver, and seven bronze medals, reflecting the squad’s skill, consistency, and competitive spirit across multiple events.

What is not seen, is that behind the scene's, away from the glare of a handover ceremony, each medal carries with it the story of countless hours of training, sweat, and sacrifice. Behind every victory were the guiding hands of dedicated coaches, the unwavering encouragement of families, and the strong support of the community.

“For us, this was more than just a competition,” said Vuyo Thati. “It was about proving what’s possible with hard work and unity. We showed that the Northern Cape belongs on the national stage in martial arts, and this is only the beginning.”

As the dojo reflects on this milestone achievement, the focus now shifts to the future. Blade Shotokan is determined to build on this momentum, to keep growing, and to continue carrying the Northern Cape’s name with pride at national and international events.

This historic debut at the IFFSK National Championship has set a new benchmark for karate in the province, and the journey has only just begun.
