Junaid Jacobs’ parents introduced him to the game of cricket when he was still very young. This was the start of a love affair with the game.
For the Kimberley-born Sol Plaatje University (SPU) student, cricket turned into his passion and a central part of his journey.
He fondly remembers being named Batsman of the Year at one time during his high school career, a recognition that highlighted his dedication and talent at the crease. Junaid says that if he could put that talent on display anywhere in the world, it would have to be the storied Lord’s Cricket Ground in London, a venue that stands at the top of his dream destination list.
But even as he dreams of bigger things, the young player always plays with heart, win or lose. He makes it clear that what the crowd sees on the field, no matter the state of the game, will be him giving 100 percent at all times, for his team, and the supporters who stand behind them.
He says that he finds this powerful drive by immersing himself in music before matches to raise his energy levels. He then visualises himself performing well for his team, adding that he is resilient, hard-working and determined – qualities that guide his approach to both cricket and life.
Junaid’s time at SPU has been both challenging and rewarding. He reflects on the many lessons learnt and memories made, crediting every experience with shaping him not only as a cricketer but also as a person.
He says that for him, cricket goes beyond numbers on the scoreboard. It is about growth, resilience and representing his team and community with pride.
