THE SPORT-crazy city of Kimberley is once again buzzing with excitement as two of its schools prepare for the launch of the newly-named Wildeklawer Primary Schools T20 competition.

Proudly presented by Staats Primary School and St Patrick’s CBC, the tournament has secured Wildeklawer as its headline sponsor, with additional backing from Point S and NTLO Embroidery to further strengthen the festival.

This year marks a historic milestone as Staats and CBC join forces to host what promises to be the biggest and most inclusive tournament yet. For the first time, the event will feature both the Under-13 Boys T20 League, managed by Staats, and the Under-13 Girls T10 League, managed by CBC.

The addition of the girls’ league marks a significant step towards equal opportunity in school cricket, giving both boys and girls a platform to showcase their talent. This opportunity extends far beyond the two host schools, with around 26 teams from across the Northern Cape – representing a wide range of schools and hub teams – set to compete in this year’s tournament.

Before the first ball is bowled, however, an official opening ceremony will take place on Thursday, September 18, at Staats’ rugby field in Bowen St, Klisserville. The ceremony starts at 5pm, and entry is free of charge. The public is warmly invited to join the hosts and the participating teams in celebrating this special occasion.

And, by the way, if you miss this ceremony, you’ll be missing out. A highlight of the formalities will be the parade of all participating teams, marching proudly onto the field in their full playing kits. Imagine this moment of pride and recognition for every learner representing their school.

According to the hosts, this parade also serves as an inspiring milestone for younger cricketers, something to look forward to as they prepare for their Grade 7 year.

Following the ceremony, at 6pm, the opening match will see Staats’ Under-13 Girls take on CBC’s Under-13 Girls, officially kicking off the tournament. This match leads into the opening weekend, during which all participating teams will begin their journey in the tournament.

The semi-finals and finals of both the boys’ and girls’ tournaments will be played on November 7 and 8, bringing the competition to an exciting conclusion.

The Wildeklawer Primary Schools T20 is set to grow into one of the Northern Cape’s showcase school sporting events – and this year’s expanded format could be just the beginning of something pretty amazing.
