The GolfRSA Qalisa Camp, recently hosted at Sishen Golf Club, brought together some of the country’s most promising young golfers for training and development.

The camp is part of GolfRSA’s broader Qalisa programme, which introduces players to structured coaching and the culture of the National Squad system. It serves as a feeder pathway into higher tiers such as the Birdie Programme and the B-Squad, while also fostering stronger links between amateur and professional golf bodies.

A young Kimberley golfer steps up

Among the juniors taking part was seven-year-old Gofaone Mohurutshe from Kimberley. She was invited by Dr Patrick Selemela, who co-organised the event with GolfRSA. Based in Kathu, Dr Selemela has been following her progress with keen interest.

According to her father, Tshepo Molusi, Gofaone was very excited to be part of the camp and gained experience under the guidance of professional coaches. According to organisers, the young golfer showed commitment to learning and impressed with the progress she has already made.

The camp also allowed participants to sharpen their technical skills. For Gofaone, that included working on putting and chipping – tools she hopes will lift her game to the next level.

Family support on and off the course

Gofaone attended with her parents, and one highlight for her was watching her mother try her hand at the game.

“She was very excited to see mommy hitting the driver for the first time, and she hit it straight like a Pro,” said her proud dad.

Her father, who has been coaching her, encouraged her to make the most of the opportunity. “I advised her to empty her cup and learn new things and not say I know how to do this or that,” he told the DFA.

High praise from the head coach

Camp organiser and head coach Val Holland said Gofaone left a lasting impression.

“My word but Gofaone is going to be an amazing player, she is so talented and so young,” said Holland. “Can’t wait to follow her career, which I sure will, with great interest.”

Holland added that she hoped to see Gofaone remain connected to the programme: “so we can keep an eye on her for our future squads.”

So, as things stand, it seems like if Gofaone keeps her eye on the ball and keeps swinging, there are quite a few fairways in her future.
