The Springbok Women have made history by qualifying for the Rugby World Cup quarter-finals for the first time, a feat that South African Rugby Union president Mark Alexander says “embodies the spirit of South Africa”.

The team, competing in England, secured their spot in the knockout stages with a thrilling 29-24 victory over Italy. This result followed their dominant 66-6 opening pool win against Brazil, ensuring that at the fifth attempt, the Bok Women will feature in the quarter-finals of the global showpiece.

Alexander praised the squad and coaching staff for their hard work and determination, calling the achievement “a remarkable victory”.

“On behalf of the South African Rugby Union, I extend my deepest admiration and pride,” he said. “You have made history, and you have made us proud. It was a performance that transcended sport. You showed grit, determination, and belief in one another and have inspired the whole nation.”

Bok Women decisive

The match against Italy saw the Bok Women take the lead from the opening minute, with No.8 Aseza Hele scoring the first try. Although Italy, a Six Nations regular, twice managed to level the score, South Africa closed out the game with a decisive try by Sinazo Mcatshulwa in the 74th minute.

According to Alexander, the team’s performances go beyond the scoreboard, carrying a deeper meaning for the country.

“Your courage on the field will have lit a fire in the hearts of young girls and women players everywhere in South Africa to dream of wearing the green and gold,” he said. “This team carries the flag with dignity and heart. You played not just for the scoreboard but for every community in South Africa.

"Your performance was a statement of identity – of who we are and what we stand for.”

The Bok Women will complete their pool fixtures against France, currently ranked fourth in the world, at Franklin’s Gardens in Northampton on Sunday at 5.45pm (SA time).
