Keshav Maharaj could not be silenced after helping South Africa win the first One-Day International (ODI) earlier this week. Maharaj took all five wickets as South Africa beat Australia 296–198 at Cazalys Stadium.

I’solezwe IesiXhosa’s Pedro Mapelo reported that it took just 98 minutes for Temba Bavuma’s team to seal the win. Maharaj, 35, tore through Australia’s top order, removing the likes of Mitchell Marsh and Travis Head before they could do much damage.

Although Bavuma and Matthew Breetzke gave the innings a strong start with a partnership of more than a hundred runs (122), it was the veteran Maharaj who stood out with a commendably sharp performance.

“I was rewarded because I made use of the good conditions on the day,” said Maharaj after dismantling Australia, a display that thrilled many South African supporters. Another player who made a difference was Aiden Markram, who scored 82 runs in the match.

The absence of key players like the injured Kagiso Rabada was barely felt thanks to Maharaj’s skill and determination. And it’s not over yet – South Africa will meet Australia again in the second ODI on Friday.

“I want to play in every match. I was disappointed to miss the T20Is – but the coaches had other ideas,” Maharaj said after the game. “It’s good to get the chance to show what I can do in the ODIs.

“Beyond that, I’ve put my mind into enjoying my cricket. We’ll try to win as many trophies as we can as a national team. I hope our game continues to improve.

“Even though people like to ask me about my age, I’m still learning at 35. The day I stop seeking knowledge is the day I’ll stop playing cricket. I believe my game will keep improving and growing because I’m a student of the game,” said Maharaj.
