Stellenbosch FC will travel to Polokwane this Saturday, August 23, 2025, holding a commanding 2-0 advantage over Sekhukhune United in the second leg of their MTN8 semi-final clash.
The first leg, played last Saturday, August 16, at the Danie Craven Stadium, saw Steve Barker’s side secure a significant lead despite a rain-soaked pitch and challenging conditions.
The Stellenbosch victory was largely attributed to a dominant first-half performance, where they capitalised on set-pieces and counter-attacks. The deadlock was broken in the 23rd minute by Nigerian defender Kazie Enyinnaya, who scored his first goal for the club with a glanced header from an inswinging corner.
Just 10 minutes later, Devin Titus doubled the lead, calmly slotting the ball past Sekhukhune goalkeeper Renaldo Leaner after a swift counter-attack.
A key impact player in the first leg was substitute Lesiba Nku. Coming on early in the game after Ashley Cupido limped off, Nku was instrumental in both goals, providing two assists, including a brilliant outside-of-the-boot pass.
He nearly added a third goal himself, striking the crossbar in the second half. Both coaches highlighted Nku's significant contribution. For Sekhukhune, goalkeeper Renaldo Leaner was tested early and made crucial saves, keeping his side in contention.
Post-match, Stellenbosch coach Steve Barker praised his team's resilience, stating, “It’s a good performance, good results,” despite the difficult pitch. His dominance over Sekhukhune coach Eric Tinkler continues, marking his eighth victory against teams managed by Tinkler.
A visibly frustrated Tinkler, however, lamented his players' actions, stating, “Unfortunately, the players did not listen to me … They punished us on our mistakes.”
Despite the deficit, Tinkler insisted the tie is not over, believing that “2-0 doesn’t mean that the game is over … We get an early one at home, it opens up the game again.”
Based on their strong first-leg performance and coach Steve Barker's consistent success against Eric Tinkler's teams, Stellenbosch FC is in a strong position to advance to the MTN8 final.
While Sekhukhune United showed a commendable comeback in their quarter-final match, overturning a 2-0 deficit, they will need a disciplined and inspired performance at Peter Mokaba Stadium to replicate such a feat against a defensively solid Stellenbosch side.
The momentum and the clean sheet favour the Maroons as they look to secure their spot in the final against either Orlando Pirates or Mamelodi Sundowns.
