Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus has turned to the trusted experience of Makazole Mapimpi as South Africa prepare for their final Castle Lager Rugby Championship clash against Australia in Cape Town on Saturday.

Erasmus confirmed that the two-time Rugby World Cup winner will rejoin the squad after captain Siya Kolisi and dynamic wing Kurt-Lee Arendse were both forced out through injury. The pair picked up their knocks during last weekend’s 38-22 defeat to the Wallabies and are expected to spend the next few weeks on the sidelines.

While the Springboks remain well covered in the loose forward department, Erasmus decided to strengthen his backline by recalling Mapimpi, who has 47 Test caps to his name. The seasoned wing was expected to link up with his teammates in Cape Town on Monday evening, bringing his trademark composure and finishing power back into the green and gold fold.

“Makazole’s experience speaks for itself,” Erasmus said. “He has been a key figure in our big moments over the years, and having him back gives us great depth and confidence as we prepare for another tough battle.”

Mapimpi’s return comes at a crucial time, with the Springboks eager to bounce back after their defeat and close out the Championship on a high in front of their home supporters.

Kick-off at the DHL Stadium is scheduled for 5.10pm on Saturday, with the match broadcast live on SuperSport.
