In a night that highlighted both fierce rugby rivalry and deep-rooted regional spirit, Kimberley Rugby Club (KRC) edged Hartswater 33-30 to claim the 2025 Frances Baard Cup under the floodlights in Hartswater on Saturday.

The match kicked off at 7pm, and a good turnout of more than 800 spectators packed the venue, with local fires burning around the field and energy running high as the home team looked to defend their turf. The final was played from the start with both sides showing intent, exchanging tries and territory in a tightly contested battle that kept the crowd on edge.

With Hartswater leading 30-26 in the dying seconds, KRC surged forward with one last attack. A decisive try and successful conversion turned the scoreline in their favour, sealing a 33-30 victory and silencing the home crowd – briefly – before applause broke out for what had been a high-quality contest.

The crowd, made up of local residents, families, and rugby fans from across the region, stood in appreciation, not just for the winning team but for a match that lived up to every expectation. A huge crowd had come to back Hartswater, and even in defeat, their support remained loud and loyal.

Meanwhile, alongside the on-field action, a Potjie Kos competition added flavour to the occasion, drawing participation from local teams and contributing to the evening’s festive spirit. The combination of food, sport, and community support created an atmosphere that transcended the scoreline.

Frances Baard Rugby Region chairman Romeo Syfers commended both teams after the final whistle: “Kimberley Rugby Club, you fought with fire and spirit to the very end. Hartswater, your supporters stood behind you with unwavering loyalty. You hosted an outstanding final,” he said. “The Potjie Kos competition, the energy in the stands, and the sportsmanship on the field reminded us why this sport matters so much to our region.

"To all players, supporters, and volunteers, you are the true champions.”

As the fires burned low and supporters drifted home, the sentiment lingered: the 2025 Frances Baard Cup final had been about more than just the game. It was a showcase of pride, participation, and the enduring power of sport to unite a community.
