For CP Mathewson, it was the one title that had always seemed just out of reach. But in Klerksdorp this past weekend, he finally got it.

Mathewson, already a decorated bowler with district and national titles to his name, has now added the Central Districts Singles Champion of Champions trophy to his long list of accomplishments. It’s a title he has chased for years, one that has repeatedly slipped away due to scheduling clashes or narrow defeats.

This time, however, there was no stopping him.

Bowling under the Northern Cape banner, Mathewson produced a masterclass in skill, precision, and focus. His ability to draw consistently and deliver pressure shots when needed gave him the edge over top players from Southern Free State, Northern Free State, and North West. On the same greens where he helped the Northern Cape win the Under-30 Inter-Districts title in 2023, Mathewson wrote another chapter in his story.

Over the years, he has become a familiar name in lawn bowls circles, not just locally, but nationally. His achievements include two BSA Under-30 Inter-District gold medals, a BSA Mixed Pairs gold, and an SA Open Fours gold. He has also represented South Africa at international events like the Multi-Nations in Australia and continues to serve as a member of Bowls South Africa’s elite Gold Squad.

But for Mathewson, this particular victory meant something different. It was personal. It was the missing piece in a career that has already inspired many across the province.

“I’ve been close so many times,” he said after lifting the trophy. “To finally win it here, in Klerksdorp of all places, it just feels right.”

As the Central Districts competition continues with pairs, fours, and mixed pairs still to come, all eyes now turn to the rest of the Northern Cape squad. If Mathewson’s performance is anything to go by, the province has plenty to look forward to in the coming days.

For now, the long chase is over. The monkey is finally off his back, and CP Mathewson can rightfully call himself a true Champion of Champions.
