If you’ve spent any time at the Kimberley Skate Plaza, chances are you’ve seen Brad Balie, effortlessly landing tricks, cheering on his fellow skaters, or mentoring a group of eager youngsters who look up to him.

The 24-year-old has become a familiar and beloved figure in the local skateboarding scene, not only for his technical skill on the board but also for his deep passion for growing the sport in his community.

Born and raised in Kimberley, Brad’s journey into skateboarding started in an unexpected but fateful way. “I first got into skateboarding when my parents were selling food at a competition,” he recalls. “Watching the action, and the minute I stepped on the board, I knew that this was for me.” That moment of inspiration set him on a path that would eventually lead to international recognition.

The tight-knit skateboarding community in Kimberley, especially at the Kimberley Skate Plaza, has played a major role in shaping Brad’s career. “The local skateboarding scene is vibrant and tight-knit,” he says. “It’s driven my journey by providing support, inspiration, and a platform to hone skills and share the love of skateboarding.”

But Brad’s impact on the scene goes beyond just skating; he’s also committed to mentoring the next generation. “Mentoring younger skaters is about giving back to the community,” he explains. “I was inspired by the guidance I received, and there’s so much joy in seeing others grow and find their passion.

"It’s all about creating opportunities and a supportive environment.”

His goal is clear: to inspire resilience and personal growth through skateboarding. “I hope to nurture a love for the sport and for our community,” he says.

Dedication and hard work pays off

This passion and hard work have now earned Brad a ticket to his first-ever international competition, the Grand Skate Tour in Russia.

His path to this global stage included strong performances at major local events, including the KDC Grandslams and placing at the Kimberley Diamond Cup Apex Finals. “That's where I got the opportunity to skate in Russia,” Brad says. “I got accepted to compete because of my dedication and hard work, and I am truly grateful.”

Brad will compete in the Street Skateboarding category, a fast-paced and highly technical style that demands creativity, precision, and confidence. “I condition my body by training like an athlete and skateboarding almost every day,” he says of his preparation. “My routine includes strength training, cardio, and flexibility exercises to stay in peak shape.”

This marks a major milestone for Brad, his first international competition. “It’s a dream come true to be able to skate abroad,” he shares. “It’s an amazing opportunity for me to be exposed to the international skate scene.”

Challenges overcome

Of course, the road to Russia hasn’t been easy. “I’ve faced many challenges, especially injuries and the mental game of skateboarding,” he admits. “But I’ve overcome them by being persistent and patient and focusing on the bigger picture.”

Brad is quick to credit those who have helped him along the way. “My biggest support has been God and my family,” he says. “I would also like to acknowledge Exilite Holdings and the Kimberley Diamond Cup for their support.”

Looking ahead, Brad dreams of continued personal growth and pushing his limits as a skater. But just as importantly, he envisions a brighter future for skateboarding in Kimberley. “I hope to see a dedicated skateboarding training facility developed in our city,” he says. “And I want to inspire others in the community.”

As he prepares to take his talent to the world stage, Brad knows that dreams like his don’t come cheap. He is calling on potential sponsors to support his journey. “I’ve worked hard to get to this point, and now I need help to make this dream a reality,” he says. “If any companies or individuals are willing to come on board, it would mean the world to me.”
