A new chapter in local football development was written on Sunday when Dr Walter Steenbok, former SAFA Technical Director and one of South Africa’s foremost football minds, hosted a Strategic Coaching Seminar in Kimberley.
The event, organised by the Sol Plaatje Local Football Association (SPLFA), drew an impressive turnout of over 40 coaches who gathered to deepen their understanding of both the technical and administrative aspects of the game.

The seminar was a pivotal moment for SPLFA, as it not only provided grassroots coaches with access to expert insights but also signalled the Association’s ambitious move towards transforming local football structures.
SPLFA Chairman Collin Bosman took a moment during the proceedings to thank those who made the event a success. “On behalf of the SPLFA, we would like to thank you, the affiliates, for making today's seminar a success. All this wouldn't be possible without you. You are an important part of how we want this LFA to look in the near future,” Bosman said.
Bosman added that the Association is committed to continued growth and development and that this seminar is just the beginning. “We will keep exposing you to the best minds in South African football. More is yet to come.”
Sunday’s seminar also hinted at even bigger developments for the SPLFA, as it was revealed that Dr Steenbok will be playing a more permanent role within the organisation.
The SPLFA leadership shared that an official announcement regarding Dr Steenbok’s position will be made soon.
“We, as a local football association, will officially announce the doctor’s new role in our organisation,” said Bosman. “We are focused on developing our communities and moving away from the cheap politics that too often distract from the real work in football. It’s time to stop just talking about development. With Dr Steenbok on board, we’ve caught the big fish, now it’s time to move.”
Despite working with a small executive team, the SPLFA has managed to push forward with meaningful programmes, showing a clear intention to prioritise action over rhetoric.
The coaches in attendance on Sunday walked away not only with fresh strategies and administrative tools but also with a renewed sense of purpose and belonging. The event underscored the importance of long-term vision, mentorship, and strong leadership in changing the trajectory of local football.
With Dr Steenbok's guidance and SPLFA’s growing commitment to development, the future of football in Kimberley and the surrounding communities looks brighter than ever.
